You're right that thinking of the US government like a family isn't accurate, but there's no explanation of how issuing our own currency breaks the analogy (when talking about a deficit where countries we regularly buy goods from are our creditors, it doesn't).

But it does illustrate the lack of economic or monetary understanding in the populace. (And of course the current president). But many reasons for populism and autocrats is it's just too hard to understand. "Deficit" might be number one on that list. Paul Ryan got a speakership out of the ignorance.
