Schumer gets paid. He’ll never lose his seat. He doesn’t care about progressive values and probably loathes progressives. He sees his job as doing nothing and collecting a paycheck with campaign funding expressly for doing nothing. He can’t and won’t change.
It has never been clearer: @schumer.senate.gov needs to step down from leadership or Dems in the Senate need to honor their oath and the trust placed in them by the people and replace him. Immediately.
Schumer hasn't brought any backbone to the role for a decade. He's still enamored with the old status quo, and thinks we can go back to how it used to be.
Really? A staffer? And not one mention of AIPAC? Or the donors? When everyone knows that's who's pulling the strings and trying to keep the Democrats quiet? And by the way, it's about class not identity. Maybe leave the ivy league tower and spend some time in the trenches with average Americans.
It can be about class AND identity. But yes AIPAC owns a lot of centrist Dems including Schumer. So does the bigger lobby the Chamber of Commerce. Why getting rid of PACs and lobbyists is key too. Overturning Citizen United and closing the door for govt officials to go straight to lobbying.
Brilliant article. Young Democrats, old Democrats and everyone in between needs to recognize that if we give attention, support and love those of us who are "different", It doesn't mean that "We" ourselves are losing support.
Ex-staffer ignores the elephant in the room, scapegoating Schumer, who's a scumbag, but he ain't the problem. The Dems' love of capitalism is, makes them the allies of the bosses, not workers. Youth get that. Reforming capitalism is propaganda. it's like asking a rapist to assault fewer victims.
Great piece!!!!! @teenvogue.com It would also be great to see a piece about all of the resistance that is going on right now, like the Declaration to #DefendResearch Against U.S. Government Censorship! https://defendresearch.org
Easy to overlook Bernie turning his back on the most qualified Democratic candidate ever to run for president after he lost the primary in 2016 thus helping to pave the way for the coup we’re currently experiencing. Schumer needs to go due to not representing his constituents, period.
"Bernie Sanders is very, very angry—at Donald Trump. He is angry enough to have spent weeks travelling on behalf of Hillary Clinton, speaking for her in union halls and arenas, to students and activists."
Nope. Bernie bros in PA & elsewhere refused to vote for her, like Dems in MI turned their back on Harris because of Gaza, not realizing that they would be endangering themselves twentyfold by not voting against the fascist regime. Smash the patriarchy.
Jesus... THIS again? I'll spare you the litany of things the holiday campaign did wrong, as well as her flaws as a candidate, since it clearly hasn't sunk in for you by now. If you can be friends with Henry Kissinger that says the world about your sense of morality.
Get these shitty geriatric centrist hacks out of our government. Dude is one foot in the grave. Fucking tired of old people running shit into the ground.
The Party needs younger, fresher ideas. But that's not enough. We also need a younger, fresher base that actually understands how politics and policy work, how ideals become goals and goals require a plan.
Not disagreeing that the Party is the problem; in fact I've said so several times.
But if your proposed policy is "standing behind immigrants," you're going to lose a lot of votes. You need to say fearlessly what specific policy you're endorsing.
Sock-o you just proposed that abandoning immigrants is a winning strategy
Bernie had specific policy proposals that didn’t suck, he could have easily won in 2016, 2020, & 2024 but the right-wing fraudulently named democrats did everything in their power to block him from that
"Easier"? Sure. But it's time that Democrats got tired of waiting for all of that young fresh energy to suddenly spontaneously show up, vote, and engage in their best interests. The flash-energy isn't working.
so far they keep getting eaten up by the blue at any cost crowd, so I don't know what supposed young energy with failing plans you're talking about. They get snuffed out by the establishment dems every time. The only thing more hateful than repubs towards actual dem ideas are centrist dems.
Centrism is less a problem than party mechanics coupled with an inability for the Left Wing to get itself together. Centrists and Leftists can talk together easily; what doesn't work is the Left-to-Center-Left not organizing itself around the things they agree on against rich Party lever-pullers.
The same centrist leaders lost to trump twice and just gave him everything he wanted in congress. We REALLY need to clean house and stop blaming the left.
To change the people at the top, you first have to do what Otterman wrote. And this problem exists in every democracy: getting (young) people to participate and invest time & work to make democracies live and breathe and work for everyone.
I wish it were easier, but we saw in November that it's not
In our environment this will never happen. Young people are being crushed from above, less safety nets, no chance to buy a first home, no financial security. It’s not going to happen spontaneously. Once again I say it’s a leadership failure, their whole purpose is to foster what you’re describing.
It was intoxicating when Kamala Harris declared; floods of donations, wild enthusiasm at rallies; but the enthusiasm couldn't close the gap for people with concerns her platform didn't address. Until people are practicing good politics all year every year it's going to be the same.
What specifically is your interest in it? I know what it is, how it works, how it's abused, and how it's used. Not sure what point you want to make, but it's a good bet we'll agree on it.
I think there's an alternative way to frame this problem. The Party is trying way too hard to consider perspectives with which the Democratic worldview has nothing in common. People in Kentucky incensed about immigration want to build a wall, but the instinct is essentially racist.
(2/2) And I think we'd be better served by agreeing amongst ourselves what we agree on: "Look, regardless of how Kentucky feels, we believe in a secure border AND a path to citizenship" (among many other things we could agree on) is a better political product than we delivered in 2024.
there is not a Democratic president who hasn't already bought into the same immigration program as GOP. A sensible immigration program is not the issue with GOP or their voters.
Not having programs that uplift the vulnerable and give young people hope is the problem for both Democrats & Republicans
Fair enough. Either way, I think we need to be having internal discussions apart from established leadership about those things that we agree on from our far left to our center, and to make that the core. There's a lot to be compromised on, but we'd agree, leadership is picking the wrong stuff.
I feel this way too and I am not young. This is in part also why Harris lost and Dems are doing it again. You cannot turn your back on humanity and expect humans to vote for you. You have to be all in on human rights. They keep trying to bargain with the devil and keep ignoring the 90 million.
Israel considers young Americans to be an existential threat especially the brown and black ones.
Why do you think Israel and its US based agents of foreign interests are funding Trump, the farright, the islamophobia industry and war in the Middle East.
Look @booker.senate.gov - this is how it SHOULD be done!
@schumer.senate.gov is the wrong man for the job.
He is NOT up to the challenge of #FIGHTING
EVERY DAY #schumer “leads” is a day that tRump and Musk EASILY WIN…
This is a problem for both parties. They have a ton of leadership that should be retired. Very few people who are young enough to relate to the newly minted voters we have today.
We need the next generation to take over and get rid of 70+ people who are way out of touch with reality of today.
"To be clear, we’re not asking for perfection — we’re demanding urgency, empathy, and courage. Instead, we’re met with compromises on core values, as if basic rights are up for negotiation. For a generation facing existential crises, that’s not leadership — it’s alienation."
"In healing these generational political divides, we can recognize our shared humanity and collective responsibility to ensure that everyone, regardless of identity or circumstance, can live freely, safely, and with opportunity. The only way to move forward is with Dem leadership willing to adapt[]"
Schmuck Chumer needs to go. Or get booted. He has long been a glaring part of the problem rather than champion of solutions to MAGA dominance in both the media and national politics. #ReplaceSchumerNow
Not so much pushing as being so rigid and unbending that he, himself is pulling away from the position young voters have. Young voters still hold their positions, views, and values. The old way and the decorum was destroyed by the GOP. Why stand on ceremony now? It’s a fight or be steamrolled now/
good, young people should stay far away from the thoroughly corrupt, pro genocide, warmongering and fascist enabling Democratic Party. Work with the Green, DSA, etc. destroy the duopoly. #DemExit
Fascinating. It seems to me that both parties are pushing away their base. Why? Because they’re hypocrites! On both sides! If you campaign for someone hung, then DO IT. If you don’t, you’re a hypocrite. Hypocrisy is the problem in politics today.
lol. 😂. Yeah they love their base about as much as as a kick in the pants. Republicans love money and power, not people. Once I figured that out, they lost my vote.
Democratic Party politicians can, and some do, enjoy lucrative careers of losing to republicans. They call themselves "centrists". I call it "meeting evil halfway".

A United States is a United People.
Divided is what the #GOP WANTS.
We need to primary 90% of the democrats in congress.

In 2008 "24 percent of people who supported Clinton in the primary as of March 2008 then reported voting for McCain."

No one who preferred Hillary to Bernie is “on the left”.
@schumer.senate.gov , your generation is over.. step aside please
The Party needs younger, fresher ideas. But that's not enough. We also need a younger, fresher base that actually understands how politics and policy work, how ideals become goals and goals require a plan.
Young people understand and do the work and then the party assembles like voltron and crushes them
But if your proposed policy is "standing behind immigrants," you're going to lose a lot of votes. You need to say fearlessly what specific policy you're endorsing.
abandoning immigrants and trying to out-republican republicans lost the last election and that same shit lost 2016
doubling down is not a great plan unless you want to lose
Bernie had specific policy proposals that didn’t suck, he could have easily won in 2016, 2020, & 2024 but the right-wing fraudulently named democrats did everything in their power to block him from that
*THAT* is the problem
I wish it were easier, but we saw in November that it's not
What is a problem is the Party is stuck trying to maintain the status quo
That's what they shape the electorate to expect and that's what they screen for when allowing any new blood to enter the system
Not having programs that uplift the vulnerable and give young people hope is the problem for both Democrats & Republicans

And I’m no teen, but Dems need younger leaders to move forward.
