If 2 people (or a group) banters between them (it happens believe me) and both are into that banter...
In this case he misread and when he later found out that she was upset about it, he apolized. Isn't that the correct way?
The larger issue that is apparently flying over your head is that we live in a society where anybody is comfortable making a rape joke at all, let alone toward a person who is the implied victim in the joke and lives under the threat of that same violence every day.
