I know the AFD gained support and a coalition will be difficult and the world is going to shit but I still appreciate that Germans held them out of power.

Actually, a coalition is all but set in the Bundestag as SPD hold more than enough seats. The question is whether Greens will get on board, and if so, their position. On the larger scale, this result will put wind in the sails of sanity in Bruxelles / Strasbourg.
If Germany's elected party can build a coalition, they may be alright. Apparently there are lots of smaller parties that would have to agree. That makes it difficult, but with the AFD looming, they'll at least have motivation.
Them being past the 5% mark gives them power already. That is seats in the parliament w/ voting and participation power, and parliamentary privileges and rights meaning e.g. immunity, indemnity and a regular salary, pension entitlements and budget to hire assistants. Very sad!
While disturbing that 20% did vote AFD, given the level of misinformation, foreign interference that Musk/trump &Co. tried to exert, I'll take it as a win also.
It’s not enough “not to work with” extremists. They must be eradicated. Strict laws making disinformation, foreign interference via social media, and foreign money in elections illegal and punishable with swift and permanent expulsion is the only way to stop the Russian cyberterrorism.
I have more faith that Germany will step forward and do this in time for their next election. I have little faith that the US, and many other European nations, have the will or the desire.
Canada tried a little, but those bills died when parliament was prorogued.
Yeah. Like…this right here tells you he’s making basic assumptions. He basing his stupid comments on the words “Christian” and “conservative”. Which is what he thinks/claims his repugnant party is.
Also…that map is alarming. A little too AB/SK-ey for me lol.
That tracks. The soviets in Eastern Germany didn’t teach about the camps and horrors of Naziism. They focused on the atrocities of the west, like bombing Dresden. So the East Germans didn’t have the conversation/guilt/purging of Nazi ideas that the west did.
Agree. Celebration is 100% warranted. Their election much like Canada’s upcoming election happened AFTER the world witnessed the decimation of the USA. This is cause for celebration but also eyes wide open to how many seats AFD did win. Germans of all people know what the fuck is what these days. 🤞🏿
I agree. The celebration is well warranted. Imagine what Elon Musk would have done if the AFD took total power... I could easily see him just spending as much time in Munich as Florida...
80% of Germans voted for non-fascist parties. And turnout was 80%, because they wanted to make sure. Germans know all about Nazism. Americans are ignorant about its catastrophic dangers.
They’ve been indoctrinated just like those in the U.S. Same playbook is used around the world. Only modified for the country they are trying to turn authoritarian.
Former East Germans have a never-ending axe to grind and remain behind West Germany in various socio-economic ways. But the public makes their own backyards into backward, unattractive places for institutions that thrive on diversity and need international markets (for labor and exports).
And the other big political parties in Germany have also shifted toward being even more right wing than before in their policy positions and public messaging.
When major “more centrist” political parties starts catering to the messages from the far right, it’s already a big win for the far right.
I agree, but keeping fascists out of power is a rather low bar for success and speaks to the danger the globe currently is in - I mean that's down in the floor's rebar territory. Surely we can get rid of them all.
The conservative parties which took the largest number of votes adopted some of the AfD policies, like anti-immigration so AfD won even before the election. And they increased their support, further normalizing being a Nazi in Germany. 50% of Germans picked openly anti-immigration parties
Yes, center-right is anti-Putin and anti-trump abd won’t recognize afd. Left party actually did better than expected, esp with young women. Could have been much worse.

It'll be a CDU, Social Dems, and Green government.
Merz has said he will not work with the Afd.

Post civil war south, East Germany.

AfD didn't win but they did get 20% of the German vote.
That's extremely concerning.

... So grateful it's only a few of us.
