The European Commission has just made it clear that the rigid constraints they had placed on public finance were totally artificial. They have now lifted them to enable massive military production.

The EC could have done the same thing to achieve rapid decarbonization and ensure good housing, healthcare, and public transit for all. They could have abolished deprivation, unemployment and economic insecurity. But they did not.
This exposes an extraordinary betrayal. It reveals that the European working classes have been lied to, over and over.
The EC has suppressed production of public services, not because it has been fiscally necessary to do so, but because it ensures the conditions for capital accumulation.
They will take on dept for this as a union. They did not want to take on debt as a union for climate transition or healthcare. They are quite different things, and have nothing to do with betrayal, and all to do with politics.
The former EEC was a kitten in that regard, compared to the EU. If you're referring to the European Commission, remember that it is ultimately constrained by the European Council.
Financing a welfare state or climate change politics with loans is one thing. Resource needs at war time are a very different thing. You can't build a nice European society, if you are intimidated by fascist and thugs both in East and West.
"Intimidated" is a mindset, which plays into the hands of certain actors (i.e. is encouraged by them). Actually in reality being threatened by them is an invention.
By the way, it has been the Council —member-states— not the Commission the ones that have imposed austerity. If they changed, the Commission would follow.
More EU states have elected right-wing governments for years, leading to right-wing Commissioners and a right-leaning EU Parliament. No betrayal, just democracy. The working class should vote left, but they don’t, because media, bought by right wing billionaires who have read Goebbels, lie to them.

Social democracy helps stabilize society so you don’t get so many folks calling for Fascism
