New Buying Power is out! I went to LA, ate a bunch of food at Erewhon, and found what I think is the often overlooked real reason for its explosive popularity. https://t.co/o7r5lzD4rv

The OG one is my corner. (And yes, I pass a ridiculous number of good looking people there while walking my dog. There’s a dog friendly park next to it.)
this was really good. btw, probably not “Erewhon in L.A.” level, but along the lines of hot people and prepared foods — have you been to the Astor Place Wegman’s yet? I just went for the first time one night last week; what an experience
@amandamull.bsky.social As fellow southerners, y’all can appreciate this. We live in Nowhere, DE, but drive 40 minutes pretty regularly to the one in Wilmington because Wegmans is better than Publix.
I mean, to be clear, you can’t get a sandwich on White Mountain Bread, but in general, yes! The prices are really good and the Wegmans brand is pretty comparable and very cheap. I like the lighting better. @luckie-reubs.bsky.social what would you add?
If you ever encounter a consumer phenomenon that seems inexplicable to you—“bizarre luxury grocery story has Los Angeles spellbound” for instance—I promise you it’s probably pretty straightforwardly explicable
So you’re saying it’s not JUST its reference to Samuel Butler’s 1872 satirical novel set in a New Zealand utopia where they’ve banned machines of every kind, giving rise to the phrase “Butlerian jihad” 😔
Interesting! I love the prepared food and prepared but you cook it food from my local Wegman's. Erewhon definitely sounds better than I would have expected from the first paragraph of your story.
I can walk to the Silver Lake one and confirm that the attractiveness level of the usual consumer (myself aside) is very high. The smoothie? Extremely overpriced but also really excellent.
Sounds like when Publix was starting out back in the day. Or, more recently on the East Coast, Wegmans. I go to LA for the first time next month, so I'll have to check it out and see how it compares.

It took me until right now, walking under it, that I realize, this would be “portico” seating along the front of the building. I don’t think your piece needed that, but that’s the word.
