Jaya is right; the consumer system was developed in part to help Gilded Age robber barons divide and conquer the working class by convincing office workers (then a newly developing cohort) that they had more in common with elites than factory workers and more to gain in an alliance with bosses.

I think if you don't want to buy things from major retailers today or any day that is great, and I would also love for everyone to remember that successful movements usually need to involve labor, and to start thinking of yourself as a worker first and a consumer second
