Slightly related, I wonder if tuition paid by foreign students to US universities is calculated as an export for trade deficit purposes. Shouldn’t it be? As a purely economic transaction, foreign people are “buying” a US product, in this case a credential.

Probably shockingly big. It was, apparently until recently, arguably one of our biggest service exports, intentionally crafted as part of the other thing we had until recently, which was "soft power".
