how difficult is a thesis defense??? asking for a friend…(especially if that friend does not feel confident in their work or literally doubts how any of it makes sense…..)

Is it for your degree? If so, keep in mind that you’re not supposed to have all the answers, and you’re not supposed to solve any deeper questioning regarding your theme
At least this is what is required in the university I graduated, the professors see students as starting their academic career, so their knowledge is vast but not that deep
yes it’s for my master’s degree! and thank you, I am just worried because my advisor gives me conflicting advice and idk not a lot of guidance and then one of the committee members is very by the book and it’s stressful 💀 I thought I would have more academic support (especially from advisor lmao 😭)
my advisor was out on maternity leave *twice* during my master's studies and I felt like I had no idea what was going on going into my defense; ymmv but I decided to approach it more like it was a conversation, and that really helped with my nerves
Very important, not knowing a answer isn't failure! Some things you won't know & aren't expected to, but you can say something like "that's a good question, I don't have the answer right now, but will look it up and get back to you, or amend the thesis to address" better than silence or "don't know"
If you have friends there doing similar research topics perhaps you can practice together and try to come up with questions you might get asked about the research and how you'd respond. Just practising speaking about your work is helpful especially if you aren't a confident speaker like me lol.
Hey user. I would echo other comments and say try not to be too worried about it. I think it is good to treat it like a conversation in something you are already really fluent and familiar with, since you have already done all the hard work and research. Shame your team isn't more supportive tho
