I feel like it needed more than just articles to be written. It needed media blitzes at the same level as egg price anger had and the old story that negative emotions sell probably works against this ever happening.

I don’t necessarily disagree. But the low rate of entrepreneurship (and the various negative consequences) in the decade-plus before the pandemic also received relatively little coverage. So maybe others just don’t see this as important an issue as you and I do.

To be fair, it's probably the 80/20 rule in reverse. The large public companies on S&P 500 are only 20% of the economy but get 80% of the press coverage. I'm bastardizing the 80/20 rule here.

Sure, but not only them. Other than Haltiwanger/Decker and a handful of others, how many economists were beating this drum? How many think tanks? Not zero, certainly, but this was hardly a top-tier issue in academic/policy circles, as far as I can tell.

I think there's ample room for media soul-searching on how we've covered the economy over the past few years. Under-covering the entrepreneurship boom (which has actually received a fair bit of press) isn't the first place I'd look.

Definitely don’t disagree on the potential favoring of negative economic stories but I know we have had regular updates on this exact story.

Specifically Kenan Fikri and Co at EIG. Hard to determine what the right amount and framing was though.
