I think this is really great because it hearkens back to something like the turtle that had the Vanishing Isle on its back. They look pretty otherworldly already, though they could use some more not-camel shapes. I love that their faces are featureless.

Thanks! Yeah I'm definitely going to play around a bit with the design to see if I can get a decent balance between something alien looking and something that's definitely meant to be camel-like.

And if you are worried about it being a "Arabian Nights" cliche as you mentioned, you could add some original fantasy or sci-fi elements or wait until the inspiration strikes you to do this with a fully original creature or some such.

I have a thing for behemoths and leviathans in fantasy/sci-fi. I think this piece looks amazing.

I'm no visual artist, so forgive my uninformed suggestion, but perhaps a few more "normal" objects - buildings, flora, ruins - could help immediately send home the scale of these magnificent creatures.
