My parents divorced in the early 70s. Mom got the house until the utilities and bank wouldn't let her put it in her name only. We had a series of "uncles" that were around only so she could have someone cash her check. We lived on cash only and no banks until mid 80s

In 1972 I got my first professional job. I was 22, had a Master's Degree, and was working in State Government. I had a bank account (but probably my Dad opened it with me). I was denied a credit card by KMart and I lived across the Street from the store!

I remember when my Mother couldn’t get credit under her name, she had to sign under my father’s name. She had to save money and work 2 jobs to separate from my Father. It wasn’t easy, but she wasn’t going to be stopped. Republicans want to return to this discrimination.

I bought my house in 2005, all I heard "is just you?" "are you planning on getting married?" I had to send a letter to the lending bank declaring that I was single and it was just me purchasing the home. Then signing the documents initialing where it is noted that I'm single.

My parents divorced in 1966. They had to prove that one of them was commiting adultery in order to get it. It was a rarity then. My brother and I were treated as if we were radioactive because of it. The good old days. Not so much. (This was in Canada.)

My mother left my father in 1964 in Australia without any of the safety-nets we have now.

But she did it anyway. The Salvos, Red Cross & extended family helped her get started. She lived in terrible poverty for years but she saved our lives.

Grateful that kind of courage isn't needed now.😿

This mother eventually divorced the man went on to a social work degree and spent her life searching. Her dgt (the one she was allowed to keep) also became a social worker. Adoption records were closed but laws changed. After her Mom’s death, she found her twin sisters 1/2

And, often single mothers with kids had to put up with verbal or sexual assaults because there weren't a lot of places that would rent to a woman with more then two children. They may have been divorced or widows but it didn't matter. The landlord knew they had power to do what they wanted.
