As much as I respect Dragonball it would be a weird pick IMO with stuff like Hunter x Hunter and YYH on the list. It would be like picking an old Nokia over a top of the line smartphone; yeah, the Nokia is old and reliable but the smart phone takes it into the future and opens up tons of new ideas.

I can't overstate how good Hunter x Hunter is; it's a battle shonen, but one that has consistently good writing and subtle but noticeable subversions that have influenced many mangas today. The ending to the Chimera Ant arc is one of the most potent pieces of character development I've ever seen.
