Eternally, the thing that makes teaching Music Theory 101 difficult: You can have two great students sitting next to each other, but one of them is unfamiliar with bass clef while the other is familiar with the syntonic comma

It’s kinda like teaching Kindergarten in that respect—some kids can fully read, some kids are still working on potty training.

I found that teaching college freshmen in general was a lot like kindergarten, and I don't mean that disparagingly. Background-wise, and just developmentally, they're all over the place.

I was shocked that the theory 101 prof had to explain ledger lines and time signatures to music majors.

On the other hand my aural skills were worse than rudimentary, and I couldn't sight-sing or take down dictation if my life depended on it.

Sometimes when I talk to theory grad students they’re worried about skills in teaching upper level classes and I really think being great at teaching theory 1 is the ultimate challenge

If they’re a guitarist, could be both! Guitarists so often have weird depth in some concepts and weird gaps in others.
