Flow was made in Blender and cost only $3.7 million -- but it defeated Hollywood at the Oscars.

Way to many EU animated movies suffer from a lack of marketing, even for French movies in France you have to be careful if you don't want to miss them in theatres.
Hopefully this change the mind of producers and they start to actually spend some money on the ad campaigns.

Its incredibly exciting, speaking as a northern European. There is a extremely active animation scene bubbling to the surface within Europe at large.

Countries like France have long produced a ton of animators. But a lot of their movies are aimed at domestic audiences.

It's easy to sneer about award shows—we all do it, I get it, no one's immune—but stuff like this holds the potential to influence not just culture, but the future of creation. Things that were considered Not Possible the day before, now are. A million people just went, "Oh... you can DO that, huh?"

Everytime something like this comes along - or even movies within the Hollywood system like The Creator - there’s reams written about how Hollywood could make huge movies on a fraction of the budget, and it gets totally ignored. They love the bloat.

I really hope one of the takeaways here is that art generally, and animation specifically, thrives on personality not perfection. They could have spent $100M to make the fur look ten percent more real and have 100% less style.

The slightly less than photo realistic style means the audience has to lean in a little to accept the set up, and that act of engaging is infinitely more enjoyable than having something "perfect" but soulless spoon fed to you.

It's why the Muppets are so enduring. I've watched grown adults get choked up talking to Kermit on a talk show when the 6'5" 250# puppeteer is literally in their line of sight. It doesn't matter. I've agreed that the puppet is a kind frog, and that agreement is where the magic lives.
