Day in the life of a union campaigner: I did a bargaining team training for City of Oakland workers while our members at the Alameda County Superior Court began a 2 day strike.

Ah man. My committee "trainings" are "hey you wanna do it? Great, dont get fired, try to make weekly meetings and we'll get you released for bargaining. You'll learn as you go along" 😆
I have learned the hard way that approach a) works only if the bargaining team doesn't have much democratic input into the process and b) leads to bigger upsets later.
We sorta have the opposite problem, our local is very young and it's basically all "democratic input" in that truly any member stepping up can strongly influence... everything. no staff, no elected with any real experience running a local, etc. It's good and bad..
Like, the best we can generally do is have me run cba "campaigns" while simultaneously holding down the FT clock punch job that makes that possible for me
Meanwhile, 70% of our members at the Cal Academy of Sciences signed a petition in support of our bargaining demands and marched on the Board of Directors meeting to deliver it. (ED Scott Sampson avoided his workers.)
We also stopped the proposed elimination of 200 school crossing guards in SF.

While all this was happening, I began promoting my Brooklyn show and made gnocchi for my kids for dinner.
Now I'm exhausted.
