thank you! I'm trying to figure out how to organize all the computer networks in a taxonomy that makes sense. it seems there were packet-switched time-sharing networks, different and separate from ARPANET, but unfortunately not all!

You might want to reach out to Ira Fuchs (BITNET) or Steve Wolff (ARPANET/Internet), who could provide the context and maybe some of the logic of how they originated?
It may be fruitful to trace the proliferation of network equipment that supported packet-switching. Otherwise, yes I think there are multiple ad-hoc networks operating between 1965-1970, as you say, and it's hard to suss out what protocols they followed.
