you think im kidding but it's actually about controlling the grid with paint buckets, and if you kill an enemy, he splats your team's paint color, which helps with controlling the board
Honestly, Metal Slug Tactics got 80% of the way there mechanics-wise, with its 'speed is armor' mechanic. Made it so you want to move the maximum distance and jump as many gaps as possible every turn. Getting caught stationary for one turn is death.
I've had a Hyrule Tactics game in my head since middle school. Dekus vs Zora's vs Gorons vs Hylians before the final chapter when Ganon's forces come rolling through.
