As cool as this place is, the vibe and ethos was primarily created by the early users, mostly the black and trans community. Even if you're here for no reason other than it's a chill place to chat about plants and post cat photos, this core ethos is why you can and even *want* to do that here. 1/2

I live in a curious area of Bristol. I'm not opposed to money moving in as the place looks nicer. It's fairly impervious to dickhead money though. They arrive for the atmosphere and leave because nobody likes them.

Not altogether true - though I do take your point. My part of South London has swanky towers, pre-&post-war council estates, industrial buildings repurposed as flats, Georgian squares & Victorian alms houses, cheek by jowel. Been here c20 yrs. It's diverse, largely friendly, & a lovely place to live

I can't speak for anyone else. I was just speaking of my own bohemian enclave in Bristol. You're describing something a lot bigger. Bristol is build on seven hills and is less a city and more a collection of small towns jammed together so not too different from what you're describing.

What I don't understand though, really, is why it's not a viable strategy to just carry on posting and ignore the 'dickheads'. Every platform has its own character, obvs (I've known a few), but aren't they all also to some degree just neutral places to chat? And to tune out the stuff you don't like?

Right enough. But if you don't mind my saying so, you've gone straight to the most extreme possible scenario (is that what they call whataboutery?). I'm making a much less dramatic point about a mixed ecology of views and the virtues of putting up with people we don't agree with.

I hear you. And I do speak as a person absolutely unaffected by the harassement you describe. But I don't know that a platform that's cleared of scumbags and bad-faith actors is even viable, let alone useful for debate, argument, deliberation etc.
