That went in the crapper at the end of the 1970s, just in time to elect Reagan. I was just coming out of college. The culture was focused on getting a good job to support your burgeoning coke habit…or whatever else gratified you. It flourished in the ‘80s. It’s been downhill from there.

The progressive movement of the early 20th century (and previous intellectuals, notably Durkheim) we all about the "discovery" of society against social Darwinism, etc. We lost that sense of society in the 1980s, "greed is good" Milton Friedman, shareholder value maximization. Downhill ever since
