Among the reasons being in SABR is awesome: it's a great place to find people who believe knowledge is important, who believe understanding our past is important, and that includes using facts and knowledge to re-evaluate and build understanding.
You get to have your nostalgia, your love for your team, your reverence for the Golden Age of baseball [whenever you believe when that was, for me the "Golden Age" is whatever was happening when you were 10 years old, for me that was the 1977 Yankees :D]
But SABR's values are under threat in this country right now. "What could be controversial about baseball??" Well, we're in an era where knowledge is not valued. In fact the current administration is trying to de-value it as much as possible.
SABR is not about to do that. We are seeing more research and more info about the Negro Leagues than ever before. We have a book coming out next year on baseball in the Manzanar internment camps of Japanese Americans. We continue to partner with the @iwbc4me.bsky.social to study women's baseball.
Why? Because *knowledge* is SABR's core value. (And we understand that baseball as a cultural force in the USA and elsewhere means the game belongs to everyone, not just white guys.) So if you're feeling gaslit by the reams of misinfo coming out of DC, join us!
