Mulroney brought in the GST, Chretien kept it. That's the main reason I don't vote for either Conservatives or Liberals anymore. GST is a tax that mainly hurts low income Canadians. It's a bullshit tax and it always has been.

I'm not sure how old you are but the GST replaced the 13.5% Manufacturers Sales Tax which came into being in 1924. The Manufacturers Sales Tax was hidden (if I remember correctly) whilst the GST is not.

I remember quite well, i am in my fifties. It seems to me that the GST covered a far greater range of goods AND services which the mst did not. It also generated a ton more revenue for the government which the mst didn't. That's why the Liberals kept it breaking their promise to get rid of it.

I'm in my late 60s so remember it very well. I can't remember everything the Manufacturers Sales tax covered. Probably a lot and why so many people were against the GST in the first place.
As much as I would love a NDP gvt, I don't think it will happen in my lifetime. I vote to keep the Cons out.

My preferred outcome is minority government, because if I am being honest, I have issues with all the major parties. It tends to be better for people in general under minority governments. My opinion anyway for all it's worth. So not much 🙂

You have a sound plan but unfortunately the Liberals and Cons don’t like to do things that take a financial hit on their supporters. While the GST pause on those essential services wouldn’t be huge it would still positively impact Canadians. We need the NDP leading at the Federal level 🤔

Your 'gotcha' still shows 53% opposed, give or take the Bloc depending on how they feel about the numbers that show them in a weak position. Try harder. Parliament also isn't made up of those ratios currently, and so an even larger section of parliament is opposed to that view.

Why not start working with Liberals and Bloc to remove the GST on diapers first? It would be a welcome relief for parents. I believe the NDP did something similar in the past. Have a list and start working your way through it in a bipartisan manner. Interests can align.
