We employed cases of deceptive implicatures (DI), i.e. speaker said something literally true but implicitly communicated something false, and asked participants whether the speaker lied and whether what she said was false (between-subjects).

As in previous studies, different cases of deceptive implicatures received different lie and truth evaluations. Overall lie attribution was 57%, overall falsity attribution 49%, and lie and falsity attributions correlated strongly (r=.94).

Perhaps surprisingly, lie attributions (r=.93) as well as falsity attributions (r=.91) were quite similar between the ten countries.
