Awesome to see Chappell Roan speaking out about health care! We have a ton of thoughts about this. Our research found that musicians have lacked health insurance at about 3 times the rate of the general population.

Active major label artists are often eligible for a union plan, though it can be complicated, dependent on earnings. For many others, the affordable care act marketplace was a big step forward, but there are still challenges with monthly premiums and unpredictable income.
For many years, we have argued that the best policy solution is a single payer plan. Current proposals in the US, popularly known as “Medicare for All,” would be a win/win for artists, labels, and all workers and businesses in our industry.
Musicians are often not classified as employees so they may not enjoy the normal benefits associated with more traditional employment relationships. We often talk about musicians as the first gig workers.
It’s easy to see the ways that single payer would benefit workers navigating an environment characterized by precarity and uncertainty. But it’d be good for businesses too, including labels. They’d ultimately save money!
We welcome everyone in music advocacy to join us in calling for the transformative change that would ensure every artist, every producer, every songwriter, every publicist, record store clerk, A&R, has access to the same health care as label heads and CEOs.
couldn’t agree more. it would be a win/win for everyone, except the profiteers against whom we are absolutely fighting in this moment as 47 does everything he can to give them unfettered, unregulated access to govt resources. #singlepayernow
