Studying a broad range of far-right actors including parties, social movements,
& terrorist organisations the results show that they
have gained more public visibility. Their relative media attention increased from around 0.7 % in the 1990s to 6.6 % in the 2015-2019 period. 3/8

Discourse network analysis shows that the mass media have introduced and amplified more issues “owned” by the far right, particularly issues of migration&security. Discursive interactions have intensified & far-right discourse networks have grown and become more centralized. 4/8

There was a discursive shift and the public visibility of the far right increased in 2015 in the context of the “refugee crisis”. In the previous periods, far-right actors and their discourse networks were rarely visible and mainly portrayed as isolated fringe actors. 5/8

Far-right mainstreaming was strongly related to mass media reactions to the AfD. The AfD gained visibility before entering the national parliament. This brought far-right actors and issues that had been isolated in previous years into the mainstream debate. 6/8

💡Take home message: To understand the success of the far right in contemporary democracies, we need to look beyond elections and consider the mainstreaming of the far right in public debates.
