Returning to Georgia, Campbell read law and was admitted to the bar in 1829, at the age of 18 (which required a special act of the Georgia legislature).

Even though he had no previous judicial experience, he was nominated in 1853 and unanimously approved to serve on the nation's highest Court. Upon Lincoln's proclamation of a state of rebellion and the start of the Civil War, Campbell resigned from the Supreme Court.
