Even people with deep publishing experience get confused about the roles in #kidlit publishing. I use a filmmaking analogy to build a bridge.
Book Editor = Producer
Art Director = Director
Book Designer = Film Editor
Author = Screenwriter
Illustrator = Actors, Cinematographer, + EVERYTHING ELSE

If E.T. had a different director, film editor, or cast it would be a VERY different movie.
If E.T. had no screenplay or producer it would not have happened at all.
Dont mind me
Managing Ed is different. They oversee operations, schedules, sometimes proofreading—editorial logistics.
In book publishing Creative Directors manage art directors (who manage designers). An AD oversees at least one imprint. A CD oversees a publishing group. I report to a CD for example.
