I decided to play with ChatGPT Deep Research function on a topic near and dear to my heart: comparing carrier commander performance in WW2. The goal was to see how impressive this ability was. It was better than I expected, but still felt lacking.

Ranked #1 was Spruance. I would agree with the answer, though I think it was one that would be pretty standard for most historians of the topic. However, note that it gives Spruance credit for Midway (and also gives it to Fletcher later one).
Ranked #2 (as a "close second") was Fletcher. I was somewhat surprised by this answer. I thought for sure it would give the #2 slot to Halsey, but it was able to capture the more thorough answer you would get moving away from the "pop history" understanding of the conflict. I concur.
Nagumo gets #4. I think the answer here is bland. I think there's more criticism that should be made about Nagumo as an admiral uncomfortable with the role he had to play.
Finally, Ozawa gets #5. Honestly, this is a big failure. Just an inability to understand the exercise when I tried to clarify the prompt. It also failed to pick up on the fact that being the decoy was Ozawa's idea and that Ozawa got the drop on 3rd fleet.
