I think a lot of people will suggest Sonic Adventure 2.

It’s probably the best overall experience of a 3D sonic game.

If you’re wanting 2D pick up sonic origins, it’s the definitive of all the originals.

it all depends on what youre looking for. if you want classic platformers, 1, 2, 3, or cd are all good picks. if you want a quality story, adventure 1 and 2, unleashed, and black knight are all great picks. generations is probably the most refined, and frontiers is also excellent.

honorable mentions to mania, rush, and the new film trilogy.

big thing to remember is this franchise varies wildly in what it does well. every game has stuff it does great and stuff that sucks.

When Sonic first came out, it was only available on the Sega consoles. The only allure to the game was that it was super fast with really good graphics. Other than that, it's a typical sidescroller/collect stuff game.
Why it's so huge now is anyone's guess. The characters are fun?

Sonic Adventure 2 has long been considered the "ambassador game". It iterates off of past themes, lore and world-building, but tells a self-contained story. Meanwhile, the gameplay is varied, tight, and slick!

if you've answered 3/4 of these with "yes", play Sonic Mania. then the original trilogy, then maybe Sonic Adventure 1 or 2. 👍

The newly released Sonic X Shadow Generations has great fast-paced gameplay, taking you on an high-speed introduction to most of the notable games of the franchise as you go through 3 gameplay styles across both halves. Story-wise, however, the best is Sonic Adventure 2 as people have suggested.

Mania’s a good entry point. Easy to get into, widely available, and a pretty fun, albeit short romp.

I find the classic Genesis games the best. They're fast, intense and fun to play. When you think of Mario, you think of precise jumps and controlling your speed vs. traction, Sonic is the opposite: you go as fast as you can, smash into enemies and collectibles while at it.

The original sonic games are fun to play on mobile for fun. If your looking for something to smash your head against the wall sonic 06 is infuriating. The newest sonic and shadow game is really good
