I am going to start the year by celebrating those scientists in my print collection whose birthdays aren’t known starting with one of the earliest recorded women in science, Peseshet. 🧪🐡👩🏾🔬 She is described in the elaborate Saqqara tomb of her son Akhethotep, royal official & overseer of priests, 🧵

My linocut shows her dispensing medicine, with hieroglyphics spelling out her name (horizontally) & indicating that she was “wer snwnt per aa” or chief doctor (who happened to be female)
Both men and women were doctors in Ancient Egypt. They had a hierarchy of titles and specialties including ophthalmologist, gastroenterologist, proctologist & dentist. They were familiar with anatomy & the roles of many organs. They knew hundreds of medicinal plants
This print is a new variation on my original print
