Imagine how much more healthy science would be if we hired and promoted faculty based on their mentorship, instead of merely counting pubs and grant dollars. 🧪

I stopped believing in pubs when I saw people slap their name on work they never did & pay for ghost writers or abuse their assistants & get away with it (bc of deportation or financial fears).
Imagine if part of your promotion package included them randomly choosing X however many of your research group to ask them "What's Professor McGlynn like to work with?"
Hell, even if they gave a flying monkey if a formal complaint went in about their behaviour, it'd be a start.
One thing my undergrad institution (a SLAC) did when I was a student is they send letters to five randomly selected students who took a class with a prof in the past 5 years, and asked them to reply with a letter describing their experience as best as they remembered. I thought this was cool.
Entirely agree. To support that model the students and mentor would need to be financially supported by the institution so that all time and effort wasn't spent focused on securing funding to exist.
