This librarian says please use the fuck out of your library! We have so much stuff now like video games, cake pans, and vlogging kits! Not to mention fun free activities to do
My library has some musical instruments, but only a few and not in great repair. I been thinking of volunteering fix up the ones they have and try to donate a few more…
YES thank you libraries have been a godsend personally and the backbone of resistance for so long! As someone who works with people experiencing homelessness, thank you for what you do for our community!
Been giving this a think today, and one of the main things we do in my circle is continuing to mask in public spaces and taking it upon ourselves to be covid-informed. Queer people, people of color, and people that exist at the intersection of those identities—
—are statistically more likely to also be disabled. They’re also more likely to have Long Covid. So we’re doing what we can to educate ourselves and others, and keep one another healthy enough to outlive these ghouls.
Thank you for bringing this up!! This is especially crucial given that public notifications from the NIH have been paused until Feb. 1, which is terrifying and could do some major damage to vulnerable people. Please stay safe in public spaces!!! 💙
Also I’m part of a group that sends donated books to incarcerated people, and there are groups like that all over the country (if your passion is around any of this). You’ll find something that could use your skills and interests!
Librarian here! Get involved in your library if you love it! there are “friend” volunteers and spots on trustee boards where we desperately need decent people to participate and help make important policy, especially around intellectual freedom and advocating for our budget.
I’m using and supporting my local libraries (shoutout to library workers!) and supporting local organizations and artists whenever I can. I’m making art and writing my heart out. I’m going to cancel subscriptions.
I’m loving everyone’s ideas on this thread, thank y’all!
Gardening! Even if human pollution improves, we need more healthy ecosystems to clean our water and air. Even small balcony gardens can help migrating pollinators!
Litter picking, particularly on holidays I don’t feel like celebrating (e.g. Veterans Day). Even if all the jerks stop littering tomorrow, somebody’s gotta pick it up.
Wearing masks, taking Covid tests regularly and feeding friends, we can’t be rational when sick and hungry.
I’ve volunteered with our local Pride chapter for the last few years, though outreach has become harder with the state of social media. (FB is our main stream of communication and fuck FB) so we are working on starting email newsletters and more in-person meetings and events. 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️
I love this!! Would love to volunteer for a local pride chapter!! Gonna look into this. We’ve also been discussing going to World Pride in DC this June and being as loud and disruptive as possible against any opposition. It just feels like the move in the face of everything that’s happening lately.
I just submitted an application to volunteer in my local public library community outreach program!! I am also looking into setting up a little free library in my yard!!
Depending on where you live as well,
I know a lot of abortion care clinics are always looking for patient escorts!!
definitely trying to cut down and be done with certain services and products. going to make a greater effort to use small/local businesses, and I’m getting many more ideas thanks to this thread!
This! of course and it all depends on our means but I have a pretty hard rule about not using Amazon or Meta products. This includes good reads and whatsapp. Same with Walmart but I know not everyone has the luxury.
Continuing to be true in my beliefs and convictions, and not let that shit slide. It's just too egregious at this point. Changing services and reading more. Supporting local businesses. Trying to engage with more "free" places of speech on the internet and have more diversity
I’ve been USING THAT LIBRARY CARD! I’m also working my way to cutting out all Amazon, Facebook, Instagram use. Streaming services are next tbh. Putting my money towards local businesses.
Being QUEERER but also giving my time, talents, and money to nonprofits and mutual aid 🫡 And taking way less shit from people. I used to be nice so people would think queer people are nice- now I’m assertive so they’re a little afraid of us at all times lol
But also I'm focusing a LOT on community and mutual aid. They don't want us caring about each other; loving your neighbor and treating others as you want to be treated is a radical idea to them.
I feel all of this. I love the radical idea of loving your neighbors. I know it’s difficult in this political climate, but it does make a huge difference to treat others how you want to be treated. I have to remind myself of that a lot right now. We’re gonna get through this together, though!!
