Also, in fairness to Arwel, he was only 5'1 / 6 stone. 50 years ago, Prendegast would have been a lock forward. There is no excuse for a player that well built to be afraid of tackling.

The jury's out on whether he's afraid of tackling, or just really bad at it. As someone who was both, I'm still not quite decided on the precise nature of his glaring weakness. Russell, on the other hand, just thinks it's beneath someone of his genius.
Russell just can't be arsed with it, like you say. It's part of his swagger and you have to respect that. I doubt Barry John ever so much as pretended to attempt a tackle.
