After that, instead of another film, enjoyed a great reading and conversation by @alissawilkinson.bsky.social of her new book, We Tell Ourselves Stories. Can’t wait to dig into it.

Capped off Night 1 of True/False with Zodiac Killer Project, and wow, did I not expect to like that as much as I did. So charming. Funny but in uncomfortable ways at times b/c of what it says about us as consumers of true crime. Really enjoyed the look of it. 16mm rocks.
Been slacking on True/False updates for Day 2. Been a packed one. Started the day with RIVER OF GRASS, a beautiful look at the Florida Everglades, its wonders and threats, and those working to preserve it. Marjory Stoneman Douglas archival footage showed off what a bad-ass she was.
Followed that with PREDATORS, one of my early favorites, with its truly uncomfortable examination of To Catch a Predator and all that it spawned. Captured the pros and cons and complications so well. Director David Osit was one of the most thoughtful and engaging Q&As I’ve seen all fest.
Third of the day was THE DATING GAME, by far the most lighthearted and funny film I’ve seen this year so far. The Chinese men seeking love and dating advice were too pure for this world. The strength lies with the subjects—they were so easy to root for.
Next came WTO/99, a world-friggin’-premiere screening! So cool. The archival footage was stellar and the political messages of the protesters in Seattle felt so diverse and varied compared to political movements of today. The police were vicious, and it was genuinely hard to watch at times.
Finished Day 2 with SALLY, a biography of Sally Ride told through her life partner of 27 years. Awesome archival launch footage. Simultaneously sweet and sad lesbian love story. Mostly just a pretty raw and honest look at Ride, what made her tick, and how that affected those close to her.
