The Cardinals had just closed a huge gap between themselves and the collapsing Phillies. That had a lot to do with Boyer getting the MVP over Callison. Mays at 6th is a head scratcher, but with what had just happened, it's understandable why he didn't win it.
I don’t know about ‘64, but yes I’m aware it’s that way today. My point is that it used to be (and still is to some extent) that voting reflected team success.
