Good gravy- the one dimwit that knows how to use a dictionary uses it to convey a message that only looks insane if you can speak, read, and comprehend WORDS w more than 1 syllable & if you donβt know it- know how to use a dictionary. His audience is not in that category & empathy MUST be a sin. π
Gee, I guess I'm more like those empathetic people on Martha's Vineyard who couldn't get rid of their 47 illegals fast enough. And the MA government stepped in and got them out, stat!
Hypocrisy, anyone?
Any time a "Christian" says anything like "the sin of empathy," you know that they're not actually Christian. They just want something they can use as an excuse to be cruel.
Empathy is not a sin. Calling it such is laughable. Empathy is the height of Jesus' teachings- envisioning walking in someone else's shoes with peace, understanding, kindness, and love. Someone trying to vilify empathy is not Christian, religious, nor spiritual, but a vile and abhorrent sociopath.
Unfortunately there's a lot of it. This is like the third time in the past 2 months I've heard or seen a conservative "Christian" try to get away with cruelty by saying empathy is a sin. They believe that God is punishing people and helping them is going against what God wants. It's insane.
Which is sad to hear. I'm ELCA / Exvangelical. Our church just voted (annual planning meeting) to attempt to expand our community caring despite our budget tightness. It's saddening to see other churches acting so blasphemously.
Same here, raised ELCA and my father is an ELCA pastor. It's crazy to see people so far entrenched in the evangelical brainwashing that they think empathy is a "sin."
Thank you!
(Unrelated sidebar: I can't find the gif I'm looking for for this. It's from Mel Brook's "The Producers", where the two gay directors are told they're done and can leave. They do this little coordinated sway saying "Thank YOU" and stroll out.)
Reading over their site and speaking from a Lutheran / ELCA background: they're just Baptists with _a lot_ of extra steps. Lots to dissent with but not worth my time.
Credit where credit is due: they got the "reject prosperity gospel" part right.
And to save time: Lutheranism is effectively Catholicism-lite. We lean heavily into the "Saved exclusively by grace and not by actions" part of the Gospel. My ELCA part means we are progressive (i.e. we freely ordain women, gays, etc in the faith).
If someone tells me "empathy is a sin" and "you must properly hate (someone)" then I'm pretty sure they're not a Christian, even if they say they are. Because that's the exact opposite of everything Jesus taught.
