Well, the film absolutely made me feel something. It is a biting critique of contemporary culture. For that, I will give it high praise. It's remarkable to me that this is a Best Picture nomination.
I loved it, it's very much a throwback to 80s horror, both in body horror and theme, so much that I think it was a mistake to not also set it in the 80s (aerobics isn't exactly popular now either). Anyone who absolutely loved it, check out Society (1989), which was almost certainly an inspiration.
Whenever I wake up thinking about the movie I watched the night before, it's a good thing. I think you're right about setting it to the 1980s, but it wasn't obviously set in the present. The Dennis Quaid character, for example, is very much a pastiche and a hyperreal character out of time.
You may have a point about the "out of time" feeling, but the automobiles and flat screens are definitely modern. I wanna see boxy cars, huge tube TVs and even bigger shoulder pads 😂
Good point about that stuff. It hadn't occurred to me to set it in the 1980s, but televised aerobics absolutely reminds me of that era. There is a lot to like about that movie, and plenty to dislike!
Sorry no one warned you about it. Body horror elements are truly shocking. Once you get past that, there is an opportunity for deep conversation and self reflection.
Kinda lingers on your thoughts afterwards. I'm not sure it will win Best Picture.
I thought it was a great concept, and visually fascinating, but I don't think it stuck the landing. The last section just didn't work for me. Otherwise, very interesting movie.
