For 20 years I lived on W. 102nd between Broadway and Amsterdam. I would take long walks up to/through Columbia all the time. We moved away a year ago so am very glad that my last memory of the area isn't this. But this is also not surprising given how badly things have been handled the past year.:(

NY Uni shut down access to a privately owned public space citing community safety concerns. now open but seating barricaded and security guarding deters use. POPS are a scam. Don’t use public space as a bargaining chip with private entities.

They should focus less on Columbia being a bastion of academic freedom (questionable) and more on the fact that they are stealing a public roadway, but otherwise glad they’re pushing.

Agreed! That's the part that infuriates me. The city gave Columbia pedestrian use of a public street in exchange for an explicit agreement to keep it public.
