The biggest Mastodon flow is scalability, the bigger fediverse is the bigger each server has to be to handle it. Imho 🦋 just came up with better solution, I can host my own pds for 3€/month.

I signed up to Mastodon a few months ago and I couldn't figure out what you are supposed to do, how to find people or content. I gave up because well, I wasn't bothered enough to figure it out.

Felt similar to installing Linux.

I completely agree, and I have been on mastodon for over a year now. But I also know that it’s just never going to be the thing. Bluesky may not either. Most people are lazy and want to be told what to use and they want it to be as frictionless as possible.

A million people are using it every day so it kind of is a thing, but I agree it won't be THE thing. Kinda like desktop Linux. Still, I think seeing how easily social media platforms can be corrupted, it's important to keep around
