William the Conqueror began this in 1066, when he gave huge areas of the country, including villages and their occupants, to his Barons. They had free reign to do as they liked and could take everything a village owned if they wanted. They couldn’t even leave the village without permission.

The custom of “Droit de Seigneur” was introduced by the Normans. A local Baron could literally have sex with a maiden before her prospective husband. The people were just animals to them, there only to support the Baron and his entourage however was it was needed.
