Animus is a really interesting and pointed word choice when it comes to the present hysteria about trans people—ill will toward a certain group of people. Part of the reason many of these folks love Trump is the way he is an animus-spewing volcano.

Judge Reyes used the term animus because it is the generally accepted term to use for unconstitutional bias. It's a legal doctrine. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animus_(law)#United_States_constitutional_law

Reyes, in that exchange, does mention she is using the term in a "commonplace" and not "constitutional" context FWIW.
