I always think about this post on tumblr, it's stuck with me for a while and I wish I could beam it into my past self's brain because it would have been so useful to have this perspective handy when fighting with my parents (I wear glasses, getting those was easy. Getting medicated was not)

I went through the entirety of basic education without ADHD medication and yet was punished for not performing well! Almost flunked high school, but all I got was talks like "you're just not applying yourself." Hmmmmm. Maybe I could have applied more of myself if I was properly medicated.

Yeah god I feel hollow when I realise how much and I lost and how much I hurt myself dealing with it by not being medicated all that time especially after finding out my dad literally was told I should have been. 🙃

I have so many things I need to take every day, and I am sure so many others do too.

Like I need heyfecer meds or I am sneezy.
I need my hair and nail vitamins or my nails split too easily.
I _should_ be taking an asthma preventer daily.

It's only my ADHD meds and my HRT people say this about.

-actually developed a social life
-started the first Pride organization for my county
-organized many successful events
-got elected to city council

i didn't realise that for YEARS i was self medicating with weed. Indica specifically. It slowed everything down, made my mind more quiet. Getting on dexies after being diagnosed ~18 months ago was lifechanging. It completely cured my agoraphobia and anxiety

I was on a tricyclic that barely did anything and up to 2mg xanax a day on top of 20mg diazepam bc the panic attacks I was having were so severe they were actually physically dangerous, laying perfectly still in bed, heart going 160bpm+ for 45 minutes. Who knew amphetamines were the answer lol

The general argument that nobody who needs a thing should be able get it because a few "cheaters" who don't need it will also manage to get it is infuriating, too. Whether it's ADHD meds, welfare funds, pathways to legal immigration status, whatever.
