I very much appreciate that y'all talked about the actual point of The Jungle. Every time it comes up I flinch waiting for someone to completely misinterpret it
This discussion reminded me of an article by historian Barbara Welke about the mass production of hazard and who ends up "owning" risk in the form of private tragedies. Attached are her intro and conclusion paragraphs. Read the whole thing for proof that academic writing can be heartwrenching.
