And, because the data is local, you can *mutate* it. Zero provides a synchronous local write API. Write directly to the client-side data and the UI updates *instantly*. Changes are synced to the server in the background. Conflicts are resolved with https://www.gabrielgambetta.com/client-side-prediction-server-reconciliation.html.

Zero is currently in alpha but it's maturing fast. We already have a few customers in production :).

There's some really cool stuff coming up feature-wise and from there we plan to go to beta over the summer.

Is it snapshotting intermediary representations of the computation (in ram / on disk?) and being clever about managing (to avoid recomputing) parts of the query result?

It keeps some intermediate on-disk state, yes. You can read more about the general approach here: https://www.vldb.org/pvldb/vol16/p1601-budiu.pdf. We did not actually use DBSP but were inspired by it and do some similar techniques.

Question: when using zero, is there anything tying me to also use zero for the write path (https://zero.rocicorp.dev/docs/writing-data)? The right replication log stuff should also arrive at the zero backend if I go around it for writes, right?

Except that you won't be able to get local first "instant" behavior in that case.
