Coming back to this, it seems that the search function has the same issue as most of the filtering options in that almost all sites with <20k views or so never show up.

If you don't believe me, try it yourself. Sort by newest (https://neocities.org/browse?sort_by=newest&tag=), go back an arbitrary number of pages so that it would've definitely been cached by now if it was ever going to be, pick a site, and search for keywords on that site until few or no pages are shown.

Special sauce scoring isn't perfect but it's also open source and I'm open to specific change proposals. It's not really broken so I can't "fix it". Turning it off and letting the browse page flood to the top with spam, trolls and toothbrush mustache crazies isn't really a reasonable solution here.
