It's a bit different as, in many situations, it's ECRs directly handling HCO for their PI's projects. Fewer senior researchers (SRs) are directly exposed to HCOs, SRs are generally paid more and have greater job security, so they're in a relatively privileged position

In this study, we interview 18 ECRs studying harmful online content. Our work highlights the many ways that ECRs cope with researched-informed trauma and stressors, regardless of methods used or discipline.

Some key findings:
😢 ECRs have compounding stressors from their research topic, low-income/support, and general grad pressures
🫣ECRs have unhealthy and healthy coping methods, including couching their traumas
💔ECRs want institutional support from their uni, discipline, professional orgs.

We're lucky to be in a discipline (#polcomm) that thinks about equity in its intellectual future. Conversations about how to support our ECRs must be a part of that, including living wages, visa/travel support, preventing advisor abuse, and mental health support.

And finally, if you are an ECR studying harmful online content starting the new year: know that you are not alone, and we are stronger together. Your trauma is valid, the work can be grueling (even if important), and you are so much smarter than this system makes you out to feel.
