so difficult to explain to rando crit whores that i don’t care about their opinions, that i don’t listen to people who cannot draw better than me, and that i am my own favorite artist 😭

getting unsolicited critique from people who don't even draw in the same style as you do is especially hilarious tbh, like any time ive received random "advice" on my art it's always been on how to draw things more realistic and im literally a cartoonist. that's not how i do things
It's is alright, just keep making wonderful pieces and share, and you might become one of my favorite artists!! I really enjoy cartooning and the illustrations and think your art is wonderful!
YES. It is wild. Like even be like 'hey open your DMs I made a drawover over a screenshot of your stream to send you so you know how to make it better' and I am like 🧍♀️
I have had this genuinely happen too, but like, they actually send a draw-over screenshot on Discord ... meanwhile I was like "my dude, this is just some sketch I make for a (private) D&D session, chill down, it's not that important." 😅
Either they genuinely think they're helping out with their self acclaimed expertise ... or they just want some self-gratification from getting the streamer's attention ... possibly both
The way I think about it is that not everyone who consumes my art will be an artist. The perspective of a layman is also one that I don’t have anymore, so really they might notice something that I would never have considered. As long as they’re respectful of course.
my favorite is when i turn down unsolicited advice and they are like “well don’t you want to improve?” absolutely! but i certainly don’t need a random person’s advice to do it because i have an eye for my weak spots in my work. but also i love drawing for the sake of art. not constant improvement.
Sometimes, criticism can be valid and actually help us improve, to which we should always strive. But art is also subjective, and we can choose what criticism we believe can help us and what criticism might not apply to what we aspire to. If we post anything publicly, criticism is sadly guaranteed.
Reminds me of the like 1 time i did an art stream and someone wandered in laughing that I wasn't using some random setting i had never heard of. Weirdest thing.
and the wild thing is that the people who HAVE gone to school for this, and who DO draw better than me, dont give crit when it wasnt asked for. Like a decent, polite person.
For a hot second I thought you were talking about critical hit values in video games and I was like "hot take, but they aren't all bad. I mean, its annoying to build fs." and then I read the rest lmao.
I mean art is subjective so like sure you can call your own art perfect and that's fine. But other artists you might end up slandering by calling them inferior in your eyes, might get a little upset at that kind of behavior, especially if you befriend a lot of artists who also love themselves.
The closest thing i have to a favourite artist is probably the tbhk illustrator, but thats just cause that art is literally gorgeous, i dont get people who hate their own art so much, it makes me feel like i have a huge ego or smth cause im actually proud of mine😭
if you refuse crit from one of these people they act like a caveman who was turned down for a date at the bar and tantrum out! they start accusing you of not being humble, not wanting to improve, etc etc, it’s wild. please shut the fuck up and go draw something by yourself!
like 15 years ago i once got this long unsolicited DM listing out every single error in a commission i did and when i responded "the commissioner is happy with it :)" they threw a fit. and of course they couldn't draw so lol
Honestly though, it's like I didn't ask for your opinion on the matter. I just like to draw bro- lemme do my thing, even if it looks janky who cares, it's subjective.
It took me an embarrassingly long time to realize you ment art critics and not like... Critical Role fans lol I thought maybe they were hounding you to draw fanart?? I just woke up 🤣
Why would you listen to people that can draw better than you unless you are specifically asking them for advice? Drawing better does not make their POV valid for your art.
i was one of the annoying high school art kids who went online and critiqued other people, haha. now i cannot fucking imagine the gall. and anyway as i grew up and developed my own practice, i see art differently, and getting "better" in that purely technical way feels sorta unimportant
I love your free unfiltered opinion fr. 💖 generally people give unwanted critiques because they feel threatened and wanna "knock someone down a peg".
I love tips and feedback, but def not unsolicited or from randos.
I feel like the rando art critic is a very online art problem.
Nobody is chasing perfect irl, in my local art community. We make art! Sell art at markets! It all looks different, unique, and no one’s handing out rando advice.
I thought this post was about TF2 when I scrolled past it but now that I’m here I’d like to say that being your own favourite artist is a super good approach and I’m proud of you, I envy your confidence
I had people show disdain when I rejected their random crit. Some saying we post our work online for people to see
It’s true but we mainly post it for self expression, we likely know the flaws anyways and what we’re going for. It feels good when even notable/experienced artists dislike random crit
I'm so glad that you are your own favorite artist. Too often creatives are their LEAST favorite ANYTHING, but self-esteem isn't arrogance. You should be able to love your creation.
To be fair im sure those dummies are young artists who are new to crit etiquette, and mistakenly think not taking crit makes you a bad person. They prob hold themselves to that dumb standard.
So to those dummies, NO. Not taking crit does not make u a bad person. Not all crit is good for u.

Ah, yes... truly wise words.

Although I could just be lucky.
