I enjoy it as well, but it sometimes feels voyeuristic to me. I've deleted shots that feel to me like I've invaded someone's private moments.

It's an interesting balance between sociology and privacy.

Thanks. And yes, I agree with what you're saying as well. Hard definitions and art don't really go hand in hand. The intangibles are often more important. The success of a shot is more about what someone takes from it, rather than the technical aspects that go into it.

I agree with @sonoma-tim.bsky.social but the aspect of street photography does not have to have people in it to convey the human element. I do think it is possible to convey this human element without the presence of humans in the picture. Maybe by telling the tale of life.

That aspect - of people not needing to be present - was one of the more surprising points in the article I posted. The example of a glove left behind in a hallway is a good one. It tells a story about people, with none present.

Another surprising part to me was it saying that street photography doesn't need to be limited to city environments. It showed people on a beach, or in a museum. So it's more about public spaces where you can observe humans candidly.

Most of the time for me, street photography is whatever catches my eye as I'm wandering the streets. It could be electric street cars like the two in your photo. Sometimes its abstract or architectural, but most of the time it includes people. Here's one of mine of a cable car going uphill.

Agreed that people need to be part of the shot. Without them, it becomes pictures of vehicles or architecture or whatever else. Where I question it, is how heavily do people factor into the composition? In my photo, they're part of the shot, but not in an impactful way.

In your shot, the people are much more of a focus. They're active in the environment. They have more of a story.

Between my shot and yours, I would say yours meets the criteria to be street photography; mine does not.

*If* you want to impose criteria of some sort, your shot might be better classified as urban landscape - a subset of street photography, but having said that, I'm leery of imposing criteria or rules.
