Events are moving so fast in the US, across so many different fronts, that I think this idea of the UK finding a 'delicate balance', or even configuring the issue mainly in terms of tariffs/ trade policy, is already becoming obsolete.

We cannot continue to toady up to Trump and ignore our immediate neighbours in Europe, or our Commonwealth partners, Canada. Yes, the US is the biggest economy and sole super power, but this present executive is no friend of ours.
However there needs to be a trigger for the UK doing something public. I am not sure what that trigger might be. Some sort of specific and public ask from the EU? If so, what might that be?
This is the defining crisis of Starmer’s premiership I’d say.
Which suggests that supine inaction would be his preferred route.
