The UK played EU to be weak by division.
The US played UK to keep EU weak.

Russia has been at war with Eur & democracy since at least 2006 Georgia-war.
UK has been run by not the sharpest minds. UK was a big part of EU, but due to first-past, & oligarch media & Londongrad, also the easiest to flip.

Much more than the stable proportional rep democracies in EU, with plural media. Rupert Murdoch and co, and Putin has little power in Brussels, but much in London.

Thank you Chris. Excellent, if depressing read. It really is time for the UK (Starmer) to choose between Washington & Brussels; between Trump & Putin or Ursula von der Leyen & Kaja Kallas. I know who I would choose (clue: not Trump & Putin!). A bridge between fascism & the EU isn’t possible.

Whatever landing space the new negotiations find a few things are clear:

- it has to make a difference to lives of citizens. Do it so £££ can improve NHS ? Bring down cost of living ?

- the argument for why it should be done needs to be a lot stronger that an emotional argument of why it shouldn't

What about the timescales for any negotiation, set against the more immediate need for Europe to 'get itself together as a serious defence player' ?

Any new regulation to, say, set up a new defence/security partnership, or defence fund, may come too late to limit impact of Trump regime actions.
